From University Research to Cosmetics? TechManage President Akiko Ono Shares the Fascinating World of Technology Transfer on the Radio!

Research conducted at universities can lead to products we use in our everyday lives.

Have you ever heard of “technology transfer,” the process of connecting these innovations with businesses and bringing new products and ideas to life?

Akiko Ono, President and CEO of TechManage Corporation, recently appeared on the radio program “President! Tell Us About Your Company” on Kanazawa Seaside FM.

During the interview, she shared insights into technology transfer, explaining how research findings from universities and research institutions can be connected with companies to create new products and business opportunities. She also introduced real-world examples that illustrate the potential of this work.

From Research on Plant Growth to Cosmetic Ingredients?!

One of the highlights of the interview was a case in which research conducted at Shizuoka University led to the development of a cosmetic ingredient.

The research originally focused on promoting plant growth. However, a researcher at a cosmetics company recognized its potential for skincare. This sparked collaboration between the company and the university researcher, eventually leading to the development of a cosmetic ingredient.

Research does not always find its ultimate application in the field originally envisioned. Sometimes, unexpected connections and fresh perspectives open the door to entirely new possibilities.

Discovering the potential of these “hidden gems” and connecting them with companies that can bring them to life is one of TechManage’s key roles.

Making Connections Between Universities and Businesses More Accessible

In the interview, Ms. Ono also discussed how she became involved in technology transfer, TechManage’s collaborations with approximately 30 universities, and its efforts to connect research with businesses in Japan and overseas.

“We’d like to collaborate with a university on something new, but we don’t know where to start.”

“We’re looking for research that could help us develop our technology or create new business opportunities.”

This episode is especially relevant to companies with these kinds of questions.

University research holds enormous potential, much of which remains undiscovered. Our mission at TechManage is to connect these possibilities with businesses and turn them into innovations that benefit society.

We hope this interview gives you a better understanding of our work and the vision that drives us.
