Next-Generation Reproductive Control Technology that Simply Converts Sexually Reproducing Fish into Parthenogenetically Reproducing Fish for Production of Full-Clone Eggs and Sterile Large Fish

An aquaculture platform regulates gametogenesis to convert ordinary fish into parthenogenetic ones. This enables efficient clone egg production to fix superior traits and allows stable farming of sterile, fast-growing triploid fish.

Advantages

- One-Generation Immediate Fixation of Elite Traits: Since no chromosomal recombination occurs in these eggs, the superior traits of the parent fish are perfectly inherited and maintained in a single generation.
- High Reproducibility and Productivity: Eliminates the strict management (pressure/thermal) required by conventional methods, achieving higher hatchability and lower deformity rates.
- Dual Benefits of Enhanced Growth and Environmental Protection: Triploid sterility redirects reproductive energy into growth while preventing gene flow from escaped farmed fish.
- Versatile Platform Applicable to Multiple Fish Species: A highly versatile genome-editing approach leveraging the control of gametogenesis.

Current Stage and Key Data

Proof of Concept (PoC) completed in model fish (medaka).
- Full-Clone Egg Formation: Successfully generated diploid eggs without chromosomal pairing or recombination via gametogenesis control.
- High Parthenogenesis and Hatching Success: Confirmed approximately 48% normal hatching and growth rate in induced parthenogenesis.
- Growth Superiority and Sterility in Triploids: Achieved 33–44% hatchability in triploid production, resulting in fully sterile fish averaging 1.3x larger than wild types.

Partnaring Model

Patent licensing, and joint research/validation partnerships for application to commercially important fish species.
- Potential partners: Aquaculture operators, aquaculture genomics/seedling startups, and major seafood/food companies with aquaculture divisions.

Principal Investigator

Fixing elite traits is crucial in aquaculture, but traditional crossbreeding requires multiple generations due to genetic segregation in sexual reproduction. Additionally, conventional physical treatments for polyploid production suffer from low reproducibility, high mortality, and frequent deformities. Addressing these challenges, this technology focuses on gametogenesis mechanisms to produce full-clone eggs in a single generation via genetic regulation. This enables immediate fixation of desirable traits and efficient production of fast-growing, sterile triploid fish.
